Thomas Jacob Hilfiger was born on March 24, 1951 in the rural town of Elmira, NY,
as a second of nine children in a Catholic family.
He graduated from Elmira Free Academy (public high school) at 19.
Had to repeat the tenth grade.
On his senior year at school, opened the shop The People's Place (December 1, 1969).
He and two buddies were selling "flares", bell-bottom denim jeans for the college crowd.
They met with visible success.
Had a Porsche, a Mercedes, a Jeep, a Jaguar and a lot of teenage female employees.
Then other retailers in the area introduced the same assortment of goods.
In August 1977 the business went bankrupt.
Tommy got a job as a fashion designer for Mohan Murjani, an Indian apparel maker from
family of textile barons.
Murjani contested the expensive concept of artistic integrity in clothing industry.
He considered Hilfiger's lack of college education an advantage.
Murjani was introducing a new line of men's sportswear and for some reason had rather
launch it under the name of his designer.
With this purpose, in 1982 the Tommy Hilfiger, Inc. had been registered.
Hilfiger signed contract making Murjani true owner of both the company and the label
TOMMY HILFIGER®.
To publicize the new line of clothes Murjani spent $160 000.
He conducted advertising campaign, wchich by the way had made Tommy famous.
Then in 1984, the menswear collection under Hilfiger's name was introduced.
The clothes were selling well, but Murjani lost money on branding jeanswear with Coca Cola®.
He went bankrupt in 1988.
His shares in Tommy Hilfiger, Inc. were acquired by Silas Chou, the heir of wealthy Hong Kong
family, engaged in textile business for decades.
The new, Hong Kong based enterprise Tommy Hilfiger Corporation had been founded.
Hilfiger was given a 22.5 percent share for branding the enterprise with his name.
The old company Tommy Hilfiger, Inc. stayed as a US based subsidiary.
On September 23, 1992 Tommy Hilfiger Corporation went on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 1993 the next equity offering followed.
May 9, 2006 the special meeting of shareholders approved the company's acquisition
by the investment fund Apax Partners Worldwide LLP
May 10, 2006 Tommy Hilfiger Corporation announced, the acquisition had been finalized.
The same day after closing, the security TOM was delisted from NYSE.
Tommy Hilfiger Corporation was transformed into limited company Tommy Hilfiger BV
domiciled in the Netherlands.

May 6, 2010 all of the outstanding equity interests of Tommy Hilfiger BV and the affiliated
companies were acquired by PHILLIPS-VAN HEUSEN CORPORATION
